First Group Discussions Feb 2016

Education in India has improved dramatically over the last three decades. Schools are accessible to most children, initial enrollment and students attendance are at their highest level(94%), and teachers are adequately remunerated. The RTE Act guarantees a quality education to a wider range of students including ‘no child left behind’ policy than ever before. Also, the midday-meal plan, for example, is a highly publicized nationwide program through which government school children across India are provided with a midday meal every day of the school week. The program is largely considered a success. Some of the government schools are now started providing free breakfast to their students, pair of uniforms, free shoes, books, school bags and stationary. However, challenges in implementing and monitoring high standards in teaching, and learning outcomes across regional, cultural and socioeconomic subsets prevent India from fully achieving this goal.

We have compiled a list of points/comments (posted by our group members, volunteers and teachers in the month of Feb 2016) to improve and maintain the high standards in teaching, learning and also to develop all the govt schools across India. We are planning to prioritize all these points and it will be implemented based on priority.

57By Kiran: I feel Mr Girish's dream requires 3 basic factors:
1. Physical infrastructure at the schools
2. Material or emotional support to students
3. The training for both Teachers and students.
My suggestion to the group is that if we can adopt one school and bring in all these into that school, we can make one school a model school to begin with. That can be replicated to other schools with a plan later.

205Akhila Vidyasandra: Try n compare to finish school system, Japanese education system
206Yogish MCE: For me the school dropout is the biggest concern. May be the same reason is for the reason for high number of dropout.
The school dropout scenario in India is "extremely high" as over 80 million children are not completing the full cycle of elementary education, while eight million are out of school over a period of years, according to UNICEF.
207Sreeharsha: Minimum education must be tenth
208Chaya Chandra Acharya: I actually go and teach to the students who r orphans. School is providing mid day meal. So there basic things r met by school and orphanage. Out of 25 children 5 children r good but rest r below below average. I started improving them 1. First try to understand their level by giving 1st std maths problem, english reading, etc and college completed student i hired. Very difficult to get they did excellent job. With 3 months of hard work i could improve only 5 children.
209Nagesh TK: Yes mam in over rural side its very difficult, even in home parents didn't take care of them, also language problem
210Chaya : If school is near to Bangalore I will also help. Please let me
211Kiran Kumar: Great Ms. Chaya. With my experience of 18+ years with school students, it is my humble request that if one can't give at least three month's intervention by taking out your time on a daily basis, things don't work. One or two days training won't serve any purpose other than wasting time of all.
212Chandra Acharya: The Karnataka government has done a lot to train teacher. But they want some one should take care them in house.
213Chaya Chandra Acharya: My school name is RTNagar Govt School, in Bangalore. Entering into the school is Hercules job. We have to prove ourselves a lot. One thing is very true CHALK and TALK yield only 20 percent result
214Chaya Chandra Acharya: We also have to take out from the student mind rajani kant, punewt, darshan at least when class r being taken
215Chaya: Saturday andSunday is holiday for me.. By sharing my knowledge I can help
216Chaya Chandra Acharya: Madam u r most welcome on saturday and sunday. My children will be wasting their time in front of tv. This saturday and sundwi am out of station, next saturday I will call u
217Chandra Acharya: Akila mam please read a book by name thotho chan translated to kannada by V Gayathri. My dream school
218 Chaya Chandra Acharya: My e-mail idisupadhya.chaya@gmail.com
We can try to incorporate the ideology of giddu krishnamurthy
219MUST Chaya Chandra Acharya: One thing i want to tell u, i may be harsh we have studied in school where proper building was not there. Teachers were really encouraging us. No bathroom, no desk , no bench. Infrastructure may improve student condition physically but making them to learn teachers should be highly dedicated. We divide ourselves into 3 to 4 group and use different method to teach and the experience
220Girish Mudigere: Shall we try to list volunteersDone
221Nagesh TK: Teachers are lack of knowledge about nowadays syllabus, if anybody have willing to trainup the teachers I will arrange for training.
222Mallika Basavaraju: Santhosh Guddiyangadi is doing great Schools, we can try to add him and Kadashettyhalli Sathish
223Yogish: Edx.org too is very good. I guess it is mainly for college and university students. All courses are free. Founder is Anant Agarwal, he did his schooling in St Aloysius college Mangalore10NNoneDone
224Harish Kumar: Ho Ra Paramesh Sir also may be to this group to be requested
225Kiran Kumar: I think it is appropriate time for all of us to have a clear understanding of what are the plans of actions we have on table.

a. Website and FB page are in place

b. The next steps are to be defined clearly for all to participate in the debate and contribute fruitfully

c. As i see, the details are still in bits and pieces. How can we put them into a strategic next move that really helps the government schools to scale up and beat the competition and excel.
Chaya : Kiran sir very true. The issue is infrastructure, student issue, teacher issue
226Chaya Chandra Acharya: The topic for tomorrowdiscussion is ''how to improve student teacher bondage''. Finally LOVING children however they are solves all the problem
227Kiran Kumar: This could be a little long note, but request you all to read it.

To get good admissions to a government school, and to excel in the process of providing the quality education, we cannot leave behind any element from infrastructure to quality of training. That means, getting the government schools to the level or over the levels of private schools in all aspects is a question. I have seen best infra structured private schools in shimoga district going to dogs and out for sale because of poor quality training. From input to output we need to have a strategy. Contributions in our own way will not suffice. If we are serious, then we will have to really make an effort to find solutions in such a way that each school with its unique possibility is brought up. Generalizing things might not work in the education domain.
228Chaya: Kiran sir we have to have a good team which has experienced teacher who had excelled in school and we have improve and take one school at a time in different regions
229Let's list out some of the volunteers name too who are ready to help schools in teaching during the weekend or during their free time.
230 Kiran Kumar: Yes Ms. Chaya. Each school is unique in its strengths and challenges. When we start looking at the possibilities of each of the schools, we will have to address many things. Drawing our attention to the challenges of the school is easy, but noticing the strengths and building a case on it to make the school unique with its strength gives this team incredible strengths and success.
231 Kiran Kumar: With the diversified state and the country we have, it is important for us to enable the schools with their strengths. Most brilliant teachers of the state are in the government schools. It is the vision of each institution and focus on nativity that has to be established in each school to be good enough to compete. The training takes a required attention if the focus is clear.
You might think that this is pure entrepreneur stuff, but this is what i have learnt hard for the last 18 years. Make your efforts count. And we can do it when we have a strategy and plan for the schools of whose teachers are in this group
232 Kiran Kumar: In my view, prioritization is always secondary. Prioritization in most of times is with the problems or issues in a given scenario. Soling the issues can only make us get a school to another schools' level; not more than that.
233 If we cant create independent identities for each of the school, then we would make government schools get into competition and that would lead to dirty politics in the end between private and government schools.
234 Kiran Kumar: Thanks Yogish, how you have uniqueness defined for NY, Boston, Salem, or harward in the US defines what they are. Not competitors and always complement each other with the identities. This is just an example striking my mind now.

270Yogish: I think parents participation at home in helping children's home work is must. I understand that this can not happen in villages. But we can't expect everything to be done by teachers or government or NGO's . I mean they can't play the role of parents. For example my son goes to public school in Bay Area (California state). This school is topmost here and have 999 score out of 1000. Believe me my wife spending at least 3 hours every day in helping his home work despite of the top most school. Until my son reaches to 8th grade parents has to be behind them and little bit of force is required to make them learn. I am not suggesting that parents has to participate in school activities, but some effort is required at home. Some groups can help to fill this gap if parents can not help due to various reasons to avoid school dropout. Once they are in high school they will be on their own and much help is not required. For example we don't help for daughter's high school home work anymore as she is reached to the stage of self motivation to study.
271In USA Yogish: I think parents participation at home in helping children's home work is must. I understand that this can not happen in villages. 272Here 90% of the parents help their kids in home work.

We can definitely fill the gap if infrastructure or the school kits are not up to the standard. Supplementing the kid by teaching at home or helping for home work is definitely not the responsibility of teachers or government.

My point is that let's not try to take the role of parents
273Girish Mudigere: Few needy kids who may be unlucky to have parents ...lets us try differently ....Example I visited healthy kids school in Haasana...certified school run by government .....parents are in jail

Kids were so brilliant dynamic and healthy

If we give them direction and care...they can become very productive citizens ...may be they are better than me

274Yogish MCE: Yes, I agree there are some exceptions. We have to identify them. Mass promotion to next grade or mass helping is not practicable.
275Girish Mudigere: Lets keep for discussion ....good points to prepare good citizens
276Top Priority Items:

Ittigi Harish Kumar: politics in Schools to be eradicated

Yogish: Avoid School Drop outs

Nagesh: We need subjects wise teacher and audio video teaching aids and subject oriented good training for teacher

Girish: Breakfast and two more snacks along with Government mid day meals

Chaya : Cloths three pairs

Dyavanoor Manjunath: Distribute Free Note books

Akhila : MSA "Make Schooling attractive"

Kiran Kumar: Sir top priority for me is to have a team that can assess the schools and guide them to develop in an unique way and utilize the strengths of the existing faculty and the environment. The same team also strategies the development plan for the next 6 months to make the school a special one.
277Yogish: Private schools are not giving anything free such as breakfast, mid day meal, milk, books or uniforms to students. private schools charge heavy donation and fees. Why do you think parents send their kids to private schools?.

Is it because :
1. the quality of education is good ?
2. Big building with new paints?.
3. Students to teachers ratio is reasonable?.
4. Security at the gate ?

Do we think that giving more free stuff will help ?. I don't think so. We have to help students to get high score. I think private schools are mainly focusing on this.
278 Girish Mudigere: Bettada Hoo movie is a good one to just get glimpses of difficulty faced by a hard working parents and boy with small sister. Above movie is in you tube Too
279Girish Mudigere: Per capita income keeps parents away from private schools and small earning by childhood labor helps family for food
So free stuff at least fills small stomachs .....and keeps away from childhood labor....I feel
280Yogish: We should train our students to be fluent in English even though we teach in Kannada medium, because we can't allow Kannada language to die. Few teachers requested spoken English classes to their students.
281Nagesh TK: Now a days from first standard English is a second language but govt is not appointing English teacher to teach that, those who are working they not able to teach that fluently, that's the problem
282Kiran Kumar: More than 60% of the private schools also are not equipped properly, Many are worst than government schools. At least government schools would have some decent land. But still they do well.
Is it somebody driving that gets good admission?
285Ittigi Harish Kumar: One of the Second Important point is:

ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಒದಗಿಸುವಸೌಲಭ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಬೇಕು
286 Krishna Prasad: Kiran mentioned very good point... goal oriented strong management...brings the positive change...just some were exemplary at government schools......vision setting skill....administration skills...etc for the teacher/headmasters/BEO etc...
289Yogish: 1. We have to help students to get high scores similar to private schools, where they focus on achieving 100% results
2. We have to help students to speak in English and prepare them to college. May be we can use the technology or dedicated volunteers to give them extra classes mainly on English
3. Make every school unique enjoyable and skids friendly - I don't know how.

These 3 are my priorities than giving free stuffs.
290ಸಮೀರ್ Damle India: In my view the issues can be broadly classified into two parts.
1. Learning methodology
2. Supporting infrastructure
Depending on learning methodology the supporting infrastructure would change.
Hence we should address learning methodology first.
There are three major aspects in the process of learning.
1. Knowing
2. Understanding
3. Representing
Our educational system today is giving highest priority on Representing and then Knowing
Hardly any focus on Understanding
Let me give an example. Ask any high school child what is 10 cube.
Most of them would say 1000. And if this question comes up in exam they will write 1000 & score full marks.
But how many will tell - 10 cube is a three dimensional shape formed by organizing 10 units of an object in (each unit) in three dimensions.

This is possible only if child can experience a cube by physically organizing such a unit.
So there is a very big effort needed in creating new learning methodology. Training teachers to understand this first and then implement. Also come up with new culture in school where a teacher also comes with an open mind to learn every moment and facilitate children to learn by experimenting and making mistakes.
Build self confidence and nurture inherent capabilities of the child!
"A creative adult is a child who survived! "
This statement makes mockery of our current education system!
291khila Vidyasandra: Children are entitled to get everything for FREE. Only then they can think of giving back to the society. And their parents will be relieved of the burden of giving education to them.

Drop outs and non free education seems interdependent
292 Yogish: My point is that dropout can't be avoided by giving more free stuffs.
293 Akhila Vidyasandra: Providing free education should be/is a mandatory obligation of the government. along with it we need some more attractive methods to make children come to the school and complete their education.
294 Akhila Vidyasandra: Not able to retain the children in the school and facilitate them to finish their education is our failure.
295Yogish: Education is free in govt schools including mid day meal right? I agree to attract kids with some innovative methods, helping for their homework and help to slow learner to pick up the speed to get high scores similar to private schools. We have good government schools and talented teachers and also NGO's to help.
296Akhila Vidyasandra: They are not slow learners, they have their talents somewhere else and we want them to learn what we want. its our problem not children's.
297Yogish MCE: In America too kids get almost free meal if parents income is below the poverty level, but no other free stuffs from schools. Mainly some companies or NGO's donate free school bags filled with stationaries every year. Of course we can't compare with USA now because the infrastructure of public schools are comparable to private schools
298Akhila Vidyasandra: Do public schools take donations, hiked fees?no. And they always wants to give best education. thats why homes are costly near public schools in US right ?
299Kiran Kumar: Exactly mr. Damle. I echo your thoughts.
301Yogish: I fully agree with Shriharsha's point. Both donor and receiver should take equal responsibilities. Also agree that fee is required, but it should not become a burden
302Akhila Vidyasandra: I/We believe that, it is a total commercial and hegemonic attitude which our country needs to overcome. education and health are n should be service sector and it is the responsibility of the state. Absolute responsibility in fact.
303Yogish: I do believe in helping who can put at least 50% of their effort
304Akhila Vidyasandra: They are putting their full effort Mr. Yogish. The prime time of their entire childhood is being spent in schools and doing the home works. Imagine that more than 8 hours of their high quality and potential time is investing in schooling for about 10 to 15 years. What do they get out of it. ? Unemployment?
305Akhila Vidyasandra: Many children who have finished elementary education don't even know the basics.Isn't it a criminal waste of their prime and potential time.
306Yogish: I don't want to post my childhood struggle (here) apart from my school work and home work. I am proud and also appreciate my parents for making me to understand the value of the money during my childhood. We can talk about that in case if we meet in India
307Akhila Vidyasandra: We give birth to our children for our happiness, our need, and bring them up according to our plans. Its been done by not only parents but also by the family, society and government. its not children's demands.
308Nagesh Srinigopal: I am sorry, unable to keep track of all the correspondence amidst my busy schedules at work. I am not contributing much on Whatsapp. However actively promoting the initiative on Facebook and have brought - in about 50 members. But sorry to say that I may have to come out of this WA group considering huge volume of message exchange. Though I understand and appreciate the ease of communication.
